It was finally announced late Friday
afternoon that officials had decided to postpone the CU-Fresno St. football
game due to the devastating flood that has hit the Boulder area. It was a no-brainer decision that took way
too long to announce. Fortunately, they
made it in time to allow Fresno not to make the trip, as they were preparing to
leave. As officials were meeting to
discuss the situation, it was virtually impossible to get in or out of Boulder,
there were dozens of people missing, and the threat was not even close to being
over. There was absolutely no reason to bring in thousands more people
into a disaster zone, nor to have 70 police officers and 2 ambulances on hand
when they could be doing real work where it was truly needed. Even the most
loyal, diehard Buff fans, most of whom were not even directly affected by the
flooding, were unanimous throughout the day that the game should be cancelled
or postponed. Thanks for making the
right choice! (Although I am a little sad about missing out on a great
breakfast tailgate!)
There has yet to be a re-scheduled date,
and it is unlikely to happen this year, although there are a couple of options:
If FSU could get UNLV to move their week 8 tilt to week 12 where both have
byes, the game could be played week 8 on October 19 when the Buffs were
scheduled for a bye. However, even this
seemingly simple idea is unlikely for all the logistical problems it
creates. They could tentatively schedule
it for December 7, and play if Fresno
St. does not make it into the MWC championship game. Or they could play it the
weekend of Dec. 14, traditionally reserved for just the Army-Navy game. Otherwise, it is likely that we will add
Fresno St. to the 2015 schedule when we have Hawaii on the road (been thinking
about that trip for a while) and could add 13th game.
Buff players will be helping out where
ever they are needed this weekend and family housing residents and other CU
students who have been displaced are invited to the Club Level today for lunch
with all the food that was ready for the game.
Six football players (as well as a few other student athletes),
including Clay Norgard, were forced out of their homes by the flooding; the
Athletic Department is allowed to put them up in hotels. However, when a player asked about his non-athlete
roommate, Coach MacIntyre said that they could not play for that student to go
to a hotel, but that he was welcome to come to the MacIntyre home instead (I
have yet to confirm this but am pretty sure it is true).
Interesting Stat: While the Buffs were hoping to break the
35,000 mark for the second week in a row, Texas A&M drew over 50,000 for
the Alabama pre-game Midnight Yell,
the evening before the game.
Now, the focus in Boulder is recovering
from the flood damage, while the CU coaches narrow in on Oregon St. and the
program’s first ever trip to Corvallis on Sept. 28. The Buffs will have to go three weeks without
playing real competition and will probably play some type of scrimmage during
that time to keep sharp. OSU meanwhile has two games in that time period so the
team can watch their next opponent play twice (tonight vs. Utah 8PM Pac12
Network and next week vs. San Diego St.) in the interim. As they did the latter
part of last week, the team will hold practices on the Kittredge lacrosse
fields as their regular practice fields are soaked. Practices are still technically closed,
however those fields are wide open if someone were to wander by.
We will methodically and meticulously
break down the Beavers over the next two weeks.

This also means that the Buffs will
remain undefeated at least until almost October!
Go Buffs!
Yo David,
ReplyDeleteCheck out my post on the 29 teams that CU could possibly play on their scheduled bye week of October 19th. Lots of intriguing possibilities if the NCAA does their part and eases our pain.
