Welcome!

Teacher by day, Buff fanatic by night, and, actually throughout the school day also. I was raised in Boulder during the dark Chuck Fairbanks years by two University of Michigan alums. I knew "Go Blue!" long before "Go Buffs!", but when a relatively unknown defensive coordinator was hired to lead the Buffs, my interest was slightly piqued. By the time I reached high school Bill McCartney was building a solid foundation with homegrown talent like Jon Embree and I remember the day in 1986 when Boulder celebrated the win over Nebraska. In college I sold beer, watched Coach Mac win a championship, Rashaan Salaam win a Heisman and I was hooked forever. When Jon Embree was hired, I renewed my season tickets and hit the practice rail. I wrote up a few things for some relatives, forwarded them to a few friends, and then made it a blog. Now I find writing about my Buffies is fun, more informative and therapy! I'll post a few times a week during the season, less in the offseason, with news, musings and links. Go Buffs!

Stream of consciousness Sunday morning Oregon post mortem

It is amazing that much of Buff nation, myself included, is actually smiling this morning after a 57-16 loss.  It's pathetic and sad actually but here we are.  Even though the Ducks quite easily covered the spread and knelt down to end the game instead of scoring again, there were a ton of positives for Mike MacIntyre and his team to take away from the loss,  The Buffs stayed with the Ducks for 20 minutes, as much as anyone has, including an opening three and out by the defense.  They were aggressive with play-calling with an onsides kick to open the game, going for it on 4th and a brilliant double reverse pass FROM P-Rich to DD Goodson.  Colorado was the first team to score on four separate possession vs. the Ducks, the first team to hold two separate regulation leads against the #2 team in the country (#1 in a growing number of voters) in two seasons, and the 16 is actually the most anyone has scored against them this year, and CU did it in less than a half. A little more than five minutes into this game the Buffs had pulled to within two TDs 29-16 and did one of those bloop kickoffs I usually hate, but Chidobe Awuzie cames oh so close to recovering it around the 30-if they were to have scored a TD there the game is drastically changed.  They also stalled three times in the redzone and settled for field goals and nine points instead of 21 or 17 or even 13.  Richardson was back to his fantastic self (although he had a few drops also), Christian Powell (after a little early passiveness) asserted himself as the starter, while Michael Adkins showed why he is getting playing time over Jones (only a few plays) and Abron.  No one else on offense has been able to get involved much in Pac12 play except for DD's big catch. On defense Addison Gillam and Greg Henderson are true stars and continue to make play after play. After that, it's suspect.  The D-line just does not get much pressure (Josh Tupou injured his ankle) and that makes it hard on everyone else.  Derrick Webb dropped a ball that almost stuck to his jersey that could have created a wave of momentum early at 3-0, but instead Oregon went on to score.  Kenneth Crawley got beat often and very badly, the team, including my boy Chido, had some major tackling lapses, and the Buffs are painfully slow in comparison to the Ducks-especially poor Parker Orms. The special teams were not awful and Darragh O'Neill is making a case for All-conference and beyond with five downed inside the 20, including two nine-irons that left divots inside the ten.  Ugly scoreboard, but many small (ugh) moral victories and the team gets ready for ASU with a little swagger and confidence
PS- Bringin the Buff lost a heartbreaker to the commish who had Mariota (53 points!) and Huff, while I could only counter with Halliday (37), Addison and no Thomas or Lyerla (idiot didn't even make the trip).

  1. Yo there David,
Looking forward to the Buffs in the desert. I am hoping that Mac and Lindgren have been working on their 3rd down conversions. The Buffs have only converted 2 out of 30 in the last two games.

Some of the problem lies in play calling by Lindgren, some lies in the lack of a consistent running game, some lies in dropped balls, and a bit goes to Wood for lacking a softer touch on shorter routes.

If the Buffs are to have any chance, they will need to succeed on 3rd downs more in line with the first two games of the season (40%), than the last two (6 1/2 percent).

But, overall, it's a learning process for both the players and the coaches. I still believe they can get the job done once they make the important mental choice to think and play like winners all the time. Sometimes, one big win against a big favorite is all it takes.

ASU has certainly been up and down this year. Unfortunately for the Buffs, the big egg laid by the Sun Devils last week against the Golden Domers will have them fired up to redeem themselves this week.
    Go Buffs!
