Welcome!

Teacher by day, Buff fanatic by night, and, actually throughout the school day also. I was raised in Boulder during the dark Chuck Fairbanks years by two University of Michigan alums. I knew "Go Blue!" long before "Go Buffs!", but when a relatively unknown defensive coordinator was hired to lead the Buffs, my interest was slightly piqued. By the time I reached high school Bill McCartney was building a solid foundation with homegrown talent like Jon Embree and I remember the day in 1986 when Boulder celebrated the win over Nebraska. In college I sold beer, watched Coach Mac win a championship, Rashaan Salaam win a Heisman and I was hooked forever. When Jon Embree was hired, I renewed my season tickets and hit the practice rail. I wrote up a few things for some relatives, forwarded them to a few friends, and then made it a blog. Now I find writing about my Buffies is fun, more informative and therapy! I'll post a few times a week during the season, less in the offseason, with news, musings and links. Go Buffs!

Looks like we are going Butch

Unless he had a change of heart on the plane ride back to Cincinnati, Butch Jones should be announced as the new head coach of CU on Tuesday or Wednesday at the latest.  He met with CU officials for five or six hours Monday, longer than he had with Purdue and he even extended the trip a little. The wives of Bruce Benson, Phil DiStefano and Mike Bohn were also present for the part of the proceedings.  They were a little secretive about it, Jones having stated he didn't like being photographed at Purdue, at one point "hiding" Jones behind a food cart to move down the hall.  The contract numbers were supposedly discussed before hand (5 years and somewhere between $13.5M and $16M, which would be $2.7M-$3.2M a year) and this meeting was more likely about everything else except the money.  There are rumors of $2-3M more for assistants.  They wooed him with visions of grand renovations and additions to the facilities.
Mike Bohn called it a "productive day" and nothing else, although everyone was seen smiling more than once.  Most reporting on the subject seemed to think (though I am not sure what it is based upon) that he was more impressed with Colorado than Purdue.  Although there was at least one internet report that he accepted the job here, Jones would not do anything without first telling his players (he did the same thing when left Central Michigan for Cincinnati).
According to his website, Jones runs a "no huddle, up-tempo offense that utilizes multiple personnel groups and formations to attack and wear down the defense".  It is a run-oriented spread, that uses the entire field sideline to sideline with screens and short passes as well as a deep vertical aspect.  His defense has been a 4-3 with and and "attacking 7 or 8 man front" that uses alignment shift and variations to confuse the offense, priding themselves on sure tackling!  He likes to adapt his special teams approach to the opponent, attacking their weaknesses. He sees that area a a full third of the game and that influences who they recruit. Nothing to complain about in that synopsis, especially the special teams philosophy, but most coaches sound like their system is strong and will be successful.
Jones has been a strong recruiter in the Midwest but many are worried about his ability to recruit the hotbeds Colorado relies on, namely Texas and California.  However, know that Jones was the first coach to offer frosh Shane Dillon, even before Colorado, which has been on Dillon since early in the process.  This would definitely be something to watch, who his assistants would be and what their recruiting expertise is.   The bigger question is probably whether or not he can rebuild a program, as both that he has taken over have been left in good shape by his predecessor at both stops, Brian Kelly, now at Notre Dame.
Cincinnati has a press conference about their bowl game is scheduled for 1:00 PM Tuesday (not sure if that is Mtn, Central or Eastern) and that could also be the coaching announcement.  CU officials hope to show Jones off at the CSU basketball doubleheader on Wednesday.
I guess BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall is the "Plan B" after interviewing on Sunday.
I am following it all on twitter and will make my first tweet with the official announcement so follow me @unicodavidsmith
